Description
How does Starane Advanced Herbicide (fluroxypyr) work?Â
Fluroxypyr, the active ingredient in Starane Advanced Herbicide, works by mimicking auxins – the hormones that are integral for plant growth. Once absorbed into the plant via its stems and leaves, fluroxypyr kills a plant’s ability to regulate its own growth, leading to uncontrollable overgrowth, deformation, and eventually, complete death.
Is Starane Advanced residual?
No, Starane Advanced Herbicide does not have any residual activity in the soil. This makes it suitable for use around waterways and in other sensitive areas, as long as it is only applied to the target weeds.
Which weeds does Starane Advanced Herbicide control?
Starane Advanced controls a broad spectrum of weeds, including:
- Woody weeds: Lantana, blackberry nightshade, mimosa bush, prickly acacia, St John’s Wort.

How is Starane Advanced Herbicide applied?
As a fluroxypyr herbicide, Starane Advanced offers several application methods designed to suit different needs and contexts. These are:Â
- Basal bark application with diesel or Biosafe
- Cut stump or brushcutter application with diesel or Biosafe
- Low volume-high concentrate spraying (e.g., splatter gun, drench gun, gas-powered gun)
- High volume spraying (knapsack or handgun)Â
- Aerial spraying
- Boom spraying
The application method you choose will depend on factors including the size of the area you’re treating, the environment, and the weed species you are attempting to control.
Is Starane Advanced safe for pastures?
Yes, it is safe for use on pastures. It selectively controls broadleaf weeds without causing off-target damage. However, temporary yellowing and transitory damage may occur in stolon-spreading grasses.
Can Starane Advanced Herbicide be used on turf or lawns?
No, Starane Advanced Herbicide is not registered for use on turf or lawns, and thus should not be used in these contexts. Consider alternative herbicides like Kamba M Herbicide or Bow and Arrow Herbicide to deal with weeds in turf and lawns.
How soon can sensitive crops be planted after applying Starane Advanced?
Thanks to Starane Advanced Herbicide’s short residual life in the soil, most sensitive crops and shrubs can be planted shortly after application. For specific examples, refer to the plant-back intervals on the Product Label.
Is Starane Advanced Herbicide rainfast?
Yes, it is rainfast within 1 hour of application, which means that after this time has passed, Starane Advanced will not be washed away by rainfall. However, if rain is expected within an hour of your desired application time, it will render the product ineffective.Â
This short rainfast period makes Starane Advanced Herbicide an excellent choice for controlling weeds in variable weather conditions.
Is Starane Advanced toxic to livestock, wildlife, or waterways?
Starane Advanced Herbicide is extremely toxic to aquatic life. While it’s safe to apply alongside waterways when carefully following the Directions for Use, it must not contaminate water sources, including rivers and streams.
It can also be harmful to livestock if ingested. Always adhere to the recommended withholding periods and keep livestock away from poisonous plants, which may become more palatable after spraying, until they have died down.

Starane is the only product I spray that can kill anything, first time. As I travel around our property it’s wonderful to have a totally reliable product. No other product that I’ve tried does that. Although there are some cheaper products, knowing it works first time, every time, makes it overall more cost effective.
